Improvements to Windows Live SkyDrive, including 5 GB of free online storage, were released to the public today in 38 countries or regions around the world!
SkyDrive provides free, password-protected online file storage and sharing. It’s a great way to make sure your files are available to you from any computer, without having to carry them around on a flash drive. I also find it really useful for sharing files that may be too big to send in e-mail.
It’s dead simple to use, so go ahead and try it out.
New in this release:
- Free online storage is increasing from 1GB to 5 GB
- Now available in many more places around the world (see if it’s available where you live)
- Faster and more reliable service
- Not in beta anymore–this time it’s official!
SkyDrive takes its place in the ever-growing collection of Windows Live offerings (Hotmail, Mail, Photo Gallery, Calendar, Spaces, Writer, Messenger, Events, Toolbar, and OneCare Family Safety). With file storage and sharing on SkyDrive, you have one more tool to help you manage your online world.
Read more about today’s release and tell the team what you think on the SkyDrive team blog.
Have fun!

I don\’t know what the WinLive team always adds extra things right when they finalize it. You would think they want us to beta test that as well before just dropping it on the way out.
I still think they need a desktop client, available Explorer add-on, allow multiple uploading, and a way to possibly pay for extra storage.
Can we get an API Please??? Or even just some form of acknowledgement if one is coming our way or not? An API would open the door to all kinds of cool tools and add-ins making SkyDirve even more useful!
that is so awsome how you hooked it up with 5GB! i was worried that i already almost used my 1GB up but logged in an seen that was like woo hoo!keep it comming u guys r the best!PSmaybe u can hook it up so we can upload upto 1GB at a time instead of only 50MB
Thanks SkyDrive team, 5G storage is great news
. Are there any IE add-on for this one?
..
Thank you sooo much!
How can I upgrade my skydrive? Anyone knows that?
Hi folks, thanks for the space, i do a lot of traveling round and having a backup of my data that i need online is great. Thanks so much
You guys are awesome…
THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS, I LOVE SKYDRIVE!!! MY COMPUTER CRASHED ON ME BEFORE AND I USED SKYDRIVE TO DOWNLOAD ALL MY MUSIC AND PICTURES AND VIDEOS BACK ON BOARD!!! NOW THAT THERE IS EVEN MORE SPACE AVAILABLE I WILL FOR SURE ADD MORE!!! I ALSO BACKED EVERYTHING UP ON DISC NOW TOO JUST IN CASE. YOU KNOW THERE IS XDRIVE TOO, SO IF 5GB ISNT ENOUGH, USE BOTH LIKE ME!!! I AM LOYAL TO WINDOWSLIVE YAHOO AOL AND GOOGLE, I DO NOT DISCRIMINATE, I LOVE ALL THE FREE SERVICES AND THE PAID ONES OF YAHOO TOO. I HAVE MY ISP THRU YAHOO SO I HAVE VERIZON YAHOO AND I GET TONS OF EXTRA\’S THERE, I COULD HAVE PICKED WINDOWSLIVE VERIZON, OR AS THEY CALL IT, VERIZON LIVE, BUT YOU DONT GET ANY EXTRA\’S SO I DONT KNOW WHAT\’S UP WITH THAT, BUT OH WELL. TAKE CARE AND THANKS MIKEY/PA
This is fabulous! The Beta was sweet, and the upgrade is teriffic!
Thanks for the SkyDrive. This is better than a flash drive. I have to backup my grandpa\’s computer by making a ZIP archive and upload it onto the SkyDrive. He needed to backup his stuff because he purchased a new computer, and he is going to move his old PC to the computer room to take over the old 16-bit Windows 95 IBM Machine. Again, thanks for the SkyDrive!
bo one hane to. learn and get alittle experience …flying?
…well i guess so
Yea! I agree that it would be more useful if SkyDrive is closely integrated with Windows. I think it\’s a great addition if we can see SkyDrive in Computer via an add-in or whatever.
Nevertheless, good work guys!
I just think this is a very good idea. Finally Microsoft, you are way overdue. But seriouisly, there is a lot of good use for a feature like this. Its like having a portable hardrive that can be taken anywhere and all you need is a internet to open it. Its good and if there is ever a way to make it much larger, like 500GB-2TB, then it will replace the portable hardrives altogether. I know it would replace mine, I just found this out and can\’t wait to start using it. Great Idea!
LOL – the first day of increasing the offering 500% and you are already being asked about increasing it to 500g-2T! Makes it sound like we are all unappreciative. It\’s a nice service, I like the idea of integrating it into Explorer.
right nice n all, but larger upload capability please !
yup, I agree with Erwin Lee, somethin simillar to LiveMail would be nice with a windows explorer drag and drop feel, maybee even some kinda of auto sync so when you aren\’t connected it just pulls any new content wou may have uploaded somewhere else. Anyway, i just submitted the sugestion so fingers crossed
There is an addon for SkyDrive… Just go to upload a file like normal, and in the part where you select what to upload,at the top just click the "To upload files by dragging them to the page, install the upload tool." Part. Then you just drop in the files you want to upload and it does it automaticly.
The upgrade, and the additional storage space, is greatly appreciated … but sorely missing is hot-link capability (for using IMG tags on other web sites, such as forums or auctions, for example). As it is, linking is only possible to a file\’s container page (the HTML page that contains the file) on SkyDrive, not to the file itself. It would be highly preferable if the files themselves were accessible, via URL, in the Public Folders area. (I\’m in need of a web location from which I can directly link to XML stylesheets for various APIs I use on my home computer – which I have so far been unable to find, free of charge, even though the bandwidth usage would be minuscule.)
As a personal file posting service, it\’s a good idea, but in the end, I\’m frustrated because I would like to use it for work. I\’m part of a medium sized company that doesn\’t yet have the resources for something like sharepoint, but we do a lot of collaborative work with outside clients. The \’collaborative\’ part usually involves file sharing (schedule sharing and updating, uploading draft and final files etc.). Groove would be totally perfect, but trying to convince most clients to spend the money is impossible. The best thing Microsoft could do for me is to offer Groove in the standard or professional versions. Skydrive would be a great alternative, but sending my clients a link that says, "hey guys!!!! check out my new files…." doesn\’t convey the professionalism I would like to demonstrate and most of the company owners I deal with will immediatly dismiss it, and oppose posting any corporate information on a service that offers an invitation like that. In the recent past we\’ve used google docs, but we\’re a microsoft company, and this would work well, but until microsoft refines the invitation and collaboration aspects of this service, I will have to continue to use google docs for work related projects.
it\’s realy cool…
is it possible to make it like GDrive??
so ppl can access through My Computer
Hey Jeff,
Have you tried Office Live workspaces? It\’s still in beta, but I think it has what you\’re looking for–free storage space for sharing documents, and a more professional target audience.
I think this live stuff is the best thing that has happened to my bussiness-Home inspections
I think its very smart to create this thing for the world…!!!
Live totally rocks! Even harder now!
Totally Rock indeedWhat about softwareDrive in windows explorer ?
Definitely Live rocks! No doubt about it!
Kudos to the Microsoft developing team!
all is ok
Absolutely fantastic! Finally I can leave all of my flash drives, passport HD, portable HD, Blackberry, and DayPlanners at home or my office and really travel Computer-FREE because now tall my data and info are truly IN my fingertips! The only thing that would make "mobile"computing easier would be total voice command response. Great MIcrosoft, this is the shizznick!
Greetings! Can anyone tell me what the attachment capacity for hotmail is? Wanting to receive some big photos, cheers
I do like the service but wish I could store files larger than 50MB.
Yeah, that is the only thing I\’d like to see. A bigger upload size allowed. 50MB is pretty small, HD videos I make often won\’t fit because they are just over 50MB. How about 1GB upload size allowed?
Do, did they ever increase the single file size to more than 50mb? If the limit is going to remain that low, it really has little to offer me.
I am sleepy, please do not take away. I need to read all.
That\’s great news! Now only if Windows Live SkyDrive can increase the upload file size limit, then it will be awesome!
thousends thanks for you guys
what a wonderful job and go ahead
