Hello, I’m Steven Abrahams, Lead Program Manager for Windows Live Messenger. I want to tell you about some of the thinking that’s gone into the new Windows Live Messenger beta, and the new features. Be sure to also check out the Messenger blog for in-depth posts on each of the new features of this Messenger beta.
When we started planning the next version of Messenger, we wanted to continue providing a great user-centered, hand-crafted experience for instant messaging, but we also wanted to bring in some new features that connect you with the rest of Windows Live.
We are truly excited about this beta release of Messenger, and so I’d like to give you an overview of some of the improvements you’ll see.
Some of the changes you’ll notice right away:
Glassy: The new Messenger, like the other Windows Live beta programs, is now framed in beautiful Windows Vista “glass,” similar to what you may have seen in Windows Vista.
Clean: We simplified the main window by removing the top toolbar and moving tabs from the side to the bottom. We found people really weren’t using the top toolbar buttons except for Mail, so we found a new spot for Mail, and removed the other toolbar buttons. We also really cleaned up the conversation window, made the toolbars there more streamlined, and gave you more room to IM.
People, people, people: You told us you wanted to see real pictures of people. So, now you can display your contacts’ real display pictures in your contact list. You can choose from 3 different picture sizes, or, no picture at all.
People and web search: You can now search for people and web pages from one field. If you type in someone’s name, we first look to see if they are in your contact list. If they aren’t, you can try searching for their profile on Windows Live, or for other info about them on the web. You can also just type in Movies in 94118 and click web search, and we’ll take you directly to the Internet search results.
Categories and groups: What used to be called “groups” is now called “categories.” The old “groups” were really just categories of your Messenger contacts. This change makes room for a new, more powerful groups feature that you can use across all of the Windows Live services. We’ll talk more about that below.
We’ve received a lot of feedback from our over 300 million customers, and we’ve responded with some great new features. Let me tell you about a few of them in more detail.
Favorite people at the top
It turns out that despite how many people you know, there are only a few that you keep in touch with really often, and want to see at the top of your contact list. Favorites is a new category in Messenger—think of it as your speed dial for friends, family, or anyone you just want to keep in view.
You can add and remove people from your favorites list and re-order them up and down. It helps you keep a select group of people easily accessible. I have my wife, friends that I frequently IM, and the folks on my team in this category. You can add as many people as you like to your favorites , or if you prefer to have everyone in one big list, you can also hide the favorites category.
What’s your scene?
Some of you who use Messenger a lot have been asking to be able to skin and colorize windows to meet your personal aesthetic or to match your mood. Well, now you can select the scene that appears in your main Messenger window, and your contacts get to see it in the conversation window too.
You start by selecting a picture, either one of the default Windows Live scenes, or any photo from your own collection. When you drag the photo over the top of the Messenger contact list, the pictures is painted across the header of the Messenger main window. Pretty cool, huh?
The other cool thing is that when you’re chatting with a friend, your scene appears in their conversation window, and their scene appears in yours.
Now your friends get to see not only your display picture and personal message, but when you’re chatting, they also get to see your scene.
Dynamic display pictures
Dynamic avatars built through our partners have been around for a while, and lots of people love them. But now, you can make your own dynamic display picture that can “react” to the emoticons you use in your IM conversations. And you can make short video clips for each of your moods.
Try it out. Click your display picture and select Tile with moods. Then, pose 5 times for your webcam (like in a photo booth), and make a fun dynamic display picture to show your friends.
What’s new with people you know
If you’re like me, you have a huge contact list, and it is nearly impossible to keep track of what everyone is up to. You and your friends are doing all kinds of things on Windows Live — posting photos, blogging, changing their personal messages – but unless you check their space or they send you a message telling you about it, you may not see the new activity.
Well, we understand what you’re up against, and so we’ve made it easy to see the latest activities from lots of different people and services all in one place: Messenger.
Messenger has a new module at the bottom of your contact list called “What’s new.” When your friends meet up for a Windows Live event, update their display picture, or post photos, comments, and blog entries on Windows Live, you see it all right there in the What’s new module. You can read updates, click through to the actual item, or move on to the next update.
New conversation window
A lot of thought has gone into the new conversation window. In fact, I have a team of developers dedicated to just that: making the conversation window rock!
One of our big improvements is to infuse your conversations with more of your personality. When you open a conversation window with a friend, the window frame allows you to instantly see their mood, what scene they’ve set, and what their personal message says. Granted, if you are a purist and just want to IM, you can, still do that too. We’ve made it super simple to hide a lot of the personal bells and whistles if that’s what you prefer.
By the way, if you use Messenger for video calls, and you have a computer and webcam capable of VGA video, you’ll want to check out the new full-screen VGA 640×480 video calls through Messenger. It will feel like you are watching TV. I am not kidding. You have got to see it to believe it.
Photo sharing in Messenger
Every day, millions and millions of files and pictures are shared through Messenger. In this latest beta release, we’ve made photo sharing a richer part of the conversation.
Now you can drag a single photo or a bunch of photos right onto the conversation window, and your photos show up right there. You can keep sending IMs back and forth while you and your friends click through the pictures. The photo sharing is synchronized, so if your friend clicks to the next picture, it changes on your screen as well.
I use this feature every day to send screen shots to people, and share photos of my daughter with family and friends. I think you’ll quickly see how it becomes a great new type of conversation.
Chatting with groups
Up to now, Messenger had been mostly about 1-on-1 conversations. But now we’ve added groups into the mix.
The new groups are lists of people who can IM with each other all in one conversation window. The group could be your family, a peer working group, book club, your Friday night poker buddies, or your home owners’ association.
Imagine you are working on a project with two or three other people, and you need to communicate frequently with everyone. Maybe it’s just about fielding a quick question, maybe you want to pull together a working group to discuss a topic, or maybe you just want to see if anyone is ready to take a break and meet up for coffee.
In the new Messenger beta, you can create a group and invite people to join. As members join and come online, the group lights up, and you can start chatting with anyone in the group who is online. By expanding the group in the main window of Messenger, you can see the list of members, and even start a conversation with someone you don’t know yet. Groups are a great way to collaborate, but also to meet new people or deepen your relationships.
What, no green guy anymore?
Messenger has always been about putting people at the center of your experience. The new design for showing your online status makes it easier than ever to see when the people you care about are available for chatting.
You can choose to display your contacts using one of 3 display picture sizes, or just show a small colored square that indicates the online status of each contact. We’ve also color-coded the display picture frames, which makes it easy to see when contacts are available (green), busy (red), away (yellow), or offline (gray).
And yes, we have set the green buddy icon free from the online status system. He and his blue pal are still at the center of our brand, logo, and Messenger icons, and they’ll always be with us. But we think the new design is cleaner, less ambiguous, and works well across all of Windows Live.
What do you think?
There have been a lot of changes in this version of Messenger. We got rid of a lot of things that had been hanging around for a while and weren’t getting the kind of use we’d like to see. We hope this has made the experience a lot cleaner, easier, and more fun to use.
We’d love to hear your feedback on the new design and experience, so we can continue to improve. And we’re looking forward to the full release, and hope that you are, too.
- Steven
I love the new design. It really adds a whole new experience to chatting.
A couple of things to say:
- Not sure why the "Groups" category always needs to be displayed if there isn\’t any active one. It just seems to take space above the "Available" group.
- When changing the \’Contact list layout\’, setting a new value under \’Label contacts by:\’ in the Options window doesn\’t seem to save after the Messenger is restarted.
- Where should we submit bugs?
Thanks guys.
Sadly, although I\’ve been beta testing messenger for years and have submitted loads of feedback, and my status for the beta is still \’pending\’. (Although being invited in the first place lol)
I have around 55 points I\’d love to share if someone could tell me how to.
Can there be a setting added to the messenger that kills all the features except for the basic IM features such as chat window, call and attach files?
All the features that are jazzy and visually make the IM look superior are too much of a distraction. So, i would like to have a setting that turns off all the crappy overload and give me just the basic IMing features, something close to what Google Talk has.
I will come on every day
MSN & Hotmail have come a long way over the years and with this new Beta client and mail client it\’s very nice and smooth to say the least. I really am enjoying it more now than before. Mail is much quicker to open now which is a huge plus for me. And it\’s visually appealing as well, the new taskbar icon is great as well.
Because of the contact list size, when sized windows of messenger needs to be scrolled as normal. Because of this,I think there should be layout options for contactlist. Vertical is very nice and usual. Horizontal layout also will be very nice.
When you have lots of online friends, people do not prefer to display their avatars, maybe just small size of them. But if horizontal layout is enabled or exist, this problem might be disappear.
I love the new look, it matches in with vista really well, and i am glad to see it looking easy to use and understand which is the key thing about msn, but i dnt like the idea with out the green msn man as that is what every one relates to msn.
dont like beta`s will wait and see !.anot
Constant error with the wlcomm.exe file.Worked for two hours before failing to sign in at all. Error Code: 84cb000a.Checking Google, this seems to be a prolific bug.
I downloaded it as soon as i knew and so far i had absolutely no issues, but the new features will need some time to adapt to. The new interface is sleek beautiful and very easy to use.
hi everybody i just got hotmail and i\’m looking for new firend
Absolutely beautiful. I love it. It\’s really great: awesome look, nice new features, and overall quality is great. I couldn\’t ask for more.
The new Messenger is nice, the only problem is that it doesn\’t work.I have the same problem that was already mentioned before: 84cb000a I cannot connect with my private windows live id (no hotmail or live.com email address) If I login with my live.com address it works, unfortunately I need my normal account
Live Messenger is beautiful and is the best of all messengers, including the uggly Gtalk. But Google is going to rule this. I don\’t know how, but google is the king. Gmail is the best email service on the web. I\’m glad I can connect MSN Messenger with my gmail account. This is great!
I can\’t seem to find the add-in manager in this new version. Have third-party add-ins been disabled?
Hi. Here are my thoughts on the beta version:
I love the colorful format, advanced look, uploading an image for the background, the photo sharing, how you can e-mail a contact directly from Messenger, and how you can set a contact signature sound…but I wish there were options to keep the other statuses, the other contacts icon, to put the display pic back on the right side of the conversation, and to delete the contact list "Groups"…I hate how it stays on top of all the windows unless I minimize it-or maybe it\’s just mine?…
~Amanda~
yo bitch am guna get ya
hey!!!!! :O
k i loveeee this version(L)
but i also loved the add ons and now there is none!!!!!!
so, wht am i to do? ^o)
Can\’t wait to try out all of those great features.Keep it up!
I\’ve downloaded the beta version excitedly after reading about the features on the web! i would say the interface is really sleek, just that it gets abit annoying when i scroll my cursor over to a contact, wanting to see the email, and instead it pops up another window with the options of im-ing the person etc. and after using the previous version for so long, i\’m quite used (and loves dearly) the feature of grouping all the chats into one window (ie there\’s only one chat window shown on the taskbar) for easier management. i find it kind of annoying when there are multiple tasks flashing at the taskbar simply because i\’m talking to 3 separate people at one time. please keep that feature for the new version!
and is it just me who cannot get to my mailbox by pressing the email button in the messenger?
Every time when I try to use the wink function(especially when I click "view all"), the program stops working again and again.
Besides, I\’m not sure where can I check the space updates which usually appear with a asterisk beside the contact. There\’s no quick click buttom that links to my space as well.
@MirandaHi, the quick link to Spaces is at the bottom of WLM, where you can see all the users recent update… In there you will see a "What\’s New"~Just click it.. then will link to your spaces~
Hi!
I downloaded WLM Beta couple days ago. Overall impression is very good. Nice look, it\’s simple and friendly, as old version was, but… I\’m having some problems with video calls. The sound sometimes is delayed or I can\’t hear my friends and have to ask them to repeat what they said. Video slows down, especially on full screen or stops for few seconds. I didn\’t have these problems with WLM 8.5. WL Mail icon shows that I\’v got a mail even I have already read it. When I try to share a photo it takes ages for other contact to accept it…
These are just few things but they can be annoying and they worked perfectly with the old version of WLM. In general I\’m quite happy with this Beta version, but there still are some things than need improving.
"Signing in to Windows Live Messenger Beta failed because to authentication service is not compatible with this version of the program" Error code: 8100030f
I am using Vista Enterpirse (32bit)
WHAT??? Unfortunately I was not able to find any reference about this error! What may cause this…???
I do not know who the idiot was that messed every thing up. I now can\’t even move messaes to some of my folders because it will not go down far enough to eveen show them. I have tryed every thing I no to move it down. So Please thank the idiot for me as I have spent the morning trying to do things that use to take seconds….Very dissatisfied customer…Luther Presson
I opened my hotmail account tonight to find this piece of rubbish insulting me.Can we please go back to the other version which worked fine!!!!!!!IF IT AIN\’T BROKE DON\’T FIX IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I think this new version is full of rubbish I will never use and just clutters up the page so that I have to scroll around to find the messages I am looking for.Looks are nothing it may look pretty for some people but for me it is a working bit of technology not something to be made to look pretty. I am so sick of boffins who sit in offices and think that the only way they can justify their existence is by creating useless rubbish software to mess up with a system that is already working.
Too difficult to look at with all the white that is now on the screen. My eyes start to hurt after a few secondsTotal rubbish
Hi, display picture is not support in Drag and Drop anymore???If so, hope it will bring back this convenient features.. since the theme able to drag and drop.If Display Picture can do that also .. would be cool (this can be done in v8.5)They got another thing is… while print screen + paste in conversation box.i would send the screenshot picture instead of sharing. Thus, final release will had the option allow users to choose "send" or "share" ???
Please please please please PLEASE.
Can we change the online status per category or group.I really want to be online and available to my closest friends and family but not always online to others.
every1 is bitchin n moanin about features… it works just the way the old one did. if you don\’t like it, downgrade. and to the \’idiots\’ who made the changes due to having no other point for \’existance\’ they are working on making the program for you to enjoy, not for you to bash on. don\’t like it? go get a fucking programming degree and design your own, you ignorant tools!!!
Ok, that all sounds wonderful but how do I bliming get it!!!!????!!!!
You idiots leave it alone if we want to change it we shold have the option stop messing with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
to get it click the Windows Live Messenger beta link… its at the top of the page… doih!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I noticed a few things that you can probably fixed. Whenever you click the mail icon instead of it logging you in to hotmail it takes you to msn.com. Also when you change the scene it doesn\’t change the conversation window color to match like in the previous version. If I click change color sceme in the conversation window where it says default color it does show in the preview of the color that matches the scene selected but when you select it, it doesn\’t show up in that color. It shows up as blue. Other than that I saw no problems.
it looks very nice…but id like how to figure outhow to get the messenger they had beffore it cuz when my puter was restored it turned back to oldenst version of messenger and i loathe it can anyone help me in getting it back?
all yall that r sayin stuff like that should shut their front door cuz all that is comin out is crap! If yall dont like the way it\’s set up then make suttin urself and see how hard it is to b PERFECT!!!! Dont go and say crap like that and tell people they r stupid or are idiots cuz they r complainin bout the program…..! It\’s life, GET OVER IT!!!!
this thing looks pretty cool other than wat all yall r sayin bout it!! Yall r stupid if you think this is "old school" cuz u r then!
MAKE AN IPHONE APP. ….YES I AM SCREAMING… WHY SHOULD I PAY A THIRD PARTY TO USE HOTMAIL ON MY IPHONE???
IT\’S GREAT WE ARE HAVING A NEW MESSENGER, BUT HOW OR WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING ABOUT THE HACKERS WHO KEEP SENDING SPAM AND TROJAN HORSES LINKED TO MSN INVITE AND RUIN ALL OR CONTACT DETAILS AND EVENTUALLY OUR COMPUTER. MAKE IT MORE SECURE PLEASE THIS TIME .
I don\’t like absence of Sharing Folders that I used frequently to exchange files with friends. Instead, we\’re obliged to use SkyDrive, which is neither integrated into Live Messenger, nor a convenient way of sharing. In addition, there is some picture sharing.
Why Messenger guys don\’t keep Sharing folders working and just add SkyDrive as an option, and not instead?

Well.. the update looks nice, but my love for Micro$oft has long gone. I used to be amazed at what they did, but now they just have a bunch of software which has become so \’User Friendly\’ that it\’s become a nightmare to actually use.Vista flopped with a fail, the 360\’s keep breaking and Live Messenger sometimes glitches out and doesn\’t allow messages to send through.I know it ain\’t my internet, and it\’s happened on all computers i\’ve used, both in the house and out.Microsoft – Buck up your ideas, We don\’t want glossy looks and a few buttons shifted around – we want something which is 100% stable, not some rush job crud.Anywho, that\’s my rant over.. lets just hope this release of Messenger isn\’t a cockup hey?Anybody juding if they should go up to vista… Don\’t! It\’s a waste of money, stick with XP.

You can report bugs through Microsoft Connect at http://connect.microsoft.com/ if you are part of our managed beta.
Otherwise, feel free to submit them through our general feedback channel: http://feedback.live.com/default.aspx or you can always leave comments here, we\’re listening.
Thanks for your input,

I have never like MSN Messenger for it\’s dual has no style no good futures and not to mention the smileys are just that SMILEYS non motion smileys. I will give the new Messenger a try other wise Im sticking with Yahoo and Myspace Messenger where at lease the smileys really do more then just look at you "YUCK"
. When MSN Messenger get there head out of the azzes let me know. AOL has done better in approving then MSN what a shame
I downloaded the new Messenger and there really nothing new about it they still need to improve the smileys as well as performance other wise its good to download seem to be no glitches. Tho it might end up with an ERROR in which it will not download but if click try again it will download in a different way which works good. But again there no real big problem with it except for the smileys they really could use improvement.
Hi! I\’ve downloaded the latest beta version of Messenger. Why have you removed the usefull Shared Folders function? Skydrive and Shared Folders haven\’t the same function. Sharing files with Shared Folder is faster! Please reintroduce it in the final version of Messenger… I hope you follow my opinion. However… great job! Bye!
I actually convinced several folks to get Live Ids solely because of the awesome "Sharing folders" feature. If this feature isn\’t in the final release it won\’t mean an uptick in Sky Drive usage, it will mean one less reason to use WLM. If anything, integrate with Mesh…integrate with something, don\’t just give us a link to a different service.
the smileys that i\’ve added to the custom ones didn\’t appear when i keyed in their shortcuts! please make it work because i find the custom ones very boring. thanks.
How do I download the new Messenger..I can\’t seem to find it anywhere? Someone please help
@ ~sExXiE sMiLeS~
You can get the download from: http://download.live.com/
MSN, you all have done a very poor job of updating windows live/hotmail. I am finding it incredibly difficult gathering my email. I have several different browsers; Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Avant. It is impossible to use Windows Live/Hotmail on the Opera and Avant browser. Why is this? In any case, I think you guys/gals need to start this updating venture over again because this one is confusing and too difficult to use.
I\’ve spent the last 20 minutes trying to find a way to ask
support for Windows Live Messenger 2008 and/or 2009!
I keep redirected to a page that asks which version of
messenger I\’m using, shows me another page and a link to the support that asks
which version of messenger I\’m using, shows me another page and a link to the
support that asks… (ad libitum) …
I hope to find support here, since now I can\’t use 2009 beta, neither 2008.
I was using without any problem messenger 2008, then I
wanted to try the new beta, but it won\’t sign in. So I\’ve uninstalled the whole
suite and sign in assistant (since wasn\’t there before) and eventually
reinstalled the "old" and stable 2008, but now it won\’t let me
sign-in! Running the test, it\’s saying that the "key ports" cannot be
accessed, when he was able to access 10 minute before!About the beta, since this problem is happening ad work, whilst at home I don\’t have any issue, I suppose is some port that has been changed and I cannot change firewall settings, of course. But I hope that doesn\’t means that reinstalling messenger 2008 the "new" ports are set as well for it.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ever since the version of Windows Live changed last week, I have not been able to access my hotmail account at work. I had our IT guy down to my office today and he said that our company server was blocking the opening of an image or something. I type in my password and then my screen just freezes and will NOT go to my inbox – simply won\’t open. Any chance of just giving me back the old version of hotmail – I was very happy. PLEASE!!
eversince I changed to messenger beta the tabs that used to be down the side have gone completely.I have read that you have moved them to the bottom mine are not there at all. Why is this?I have tried to get them back, by following instructions saying click tools menu in messenger then select options. Then click log on button. What comes up then does not include tabs,so I can\’t choose restore defaults option as the instructons say. It goes on to say then hit apply but i can\’t or I would. Can someone please tell me why this happening or rather NOT happening, I keep going over and over it and am getting nowhere.
Everything is great, love this "clean" style of the contact list, BUTI totally HATE the display pictures on the right of the chat window….
i cant see any of my emoticon anymore? how can i rectify that? pls… i really love my emoticons
can you please tell me why, i cant see the colored msn names anymore

You should have done the photo sharing better. I want to see the picture in full screen. isn\’t it easier when you implement a path where the pic is saved or just doubleklicking on the picture? jUst a suggestion

is there any way that you could make an online messenger that we wouldn\’t have to download?
something where we could sign in online
Please would anyone tell me !!! Why isn\’t the emoticon problem solving?? Does anyone know how to fix it? I can\’t see any of them although I have checked all the settings
I love this new version all but for the fact that I CAN\’T SEE MY SMILIES. Some other people can see them sometimes, and I can see other people\’s who have this version. IT\’S SO ANNOYING.
Fast??? How about SLOW!!! I tried to send messages to my contacts and it took forever to track them down through PAGES tha took up \’way too much space! Where is the easy click sidebar??? This is much slower…and therefore much WORSE!!!

This new set-up SUCKS!!! I could care less about movies and crap like that.PLEASE GO BACK TO THE OLD FORMAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this format is really really bad…………i want my classic back………RIGHT NOW
When will you people ever learn. This is another of the constantly unrequested changes that is the biggest load of crap
you have come up with. I have also tried IE7 (which does not work properly) and have tried to stay with IE6 but you
have now currupted the E-Mail. Why can\’t you just leave it alone or at least allow users the option to revert back to
what does work. You are really making a case for your competition. I am glad I don\’t have "Vista" to add to the
confusion. You need to listen to the majority of comments and allow users to use what they like and can make work.
This format is not the answer for most of us. Please give us a choice to use "classic". I just want to sent emails.
This new format is terrible. Please change it back. There\’s alot of us unhappy people out here who hate the new change.
this is shitty, who was smokin something funny, really,
i cant find my junk, deleted, draft or personal folders,
and to top it off i was reading a email and it went some where and now i cant find it and it was from my sons teacher,
now i have to take the morning off of work to go and talk to her without pay might i add, also all my things for a court
date was on there, that now i don\’t have the info to bring with me, So thanks to the crack heads that could just leave
things alone, or worked out everything befor they changed everything…You really should change it back it seems like
lots of people are mad about this and how your puttin peoples life on hold.
thank-you fom a really pissed of mother..
Hate the new version…hard to see the different lines, mine works slower rather than faster, some of may folders are covered by other words etc….I would much prefer to return to the old version and wish we would have been given a choice!
I have used Microsoft Outlook, BlackBerry, Yahoo, G-Mail, and Hotmail. Not gonna lie, up until this point Hotmail was my most favorite e-mail account of all time. I loved to have it for my personal life. Now some moron comes along and changes the interface and now we\’re all screwed! Thanks a lot! I can\’t get Hotmail to pull up on the internet on my BlackBerry or any other mobile device for that matter– even when I default my internet to "mobile view". Not to mention, when it finally gets around to halfway pulling up, I can\’t get into my Inbox! If this was a sick way of saying that Hotmail is a sell-out and is trying to get everyone to switch to other e-mail servers, Hotmail has my standing applause!
This is great i am looking forward for the dynamic avatars. cause i saw my friend who is using that one but unfortunately it only can be done by chinese software. Well i don\’t know how to read chinese or getting any pirated chinese software lol.
I am sure the Windows Live team will be all over the emoticon issues. Seems simple enough to fix. For the rest of the mature audience that do not rely on smiley faces to show how cutesy we really are. You will have to suffer with a horrible format, scrolling To, CC, BCC to see names, missing contacts, slow send rates and other crap. Microsoft would like to show everyone how AWESOME web 2.0 and AJAX really is and no you cannot get back to the way you liked it. Can\’t see it on your blackberry…. Too bad buy a windows mobile device. Can\’t see your email in Opera or say Chrome… Too bad use IE7. MS offers cool Avatars, Color changes and Emoticons because that is what is important when you send email. You must conform to Microsoft standards or suffer the consequences. Microsoft you are failing at epic rates. I can\’t wait for IE8 and Windows 7. Your crack team of designers can\’t see the forest through the trees. Like having two links to Hotmail on the MSN homepage that didn\’t need to be redesigned.
Absolutely hate this new way. I can\’t get to my inbox or sent messages easily. Can\’t forward messages to groups of people, am going to switch to yahoo, as It\’s easier to use, I don\’t have the time or patience to use this anymore. When in the new hotmail system one forwards a received email no contact list appears (in the old system it was easy!!!!!). Is this an improvement? How do you add the correct email address to the forwarded party????? Help!
why for gods sake are you messing with what WORKS>>>> now i have to go thru all kinds of contortions to foward an e mail to a friend. haven\’t you heard of "if it ain\’t broken dont fix it"!!!!!!!
I\’ve lost the ability to send e-mail to the "Saved" file. Please turn my computer back in time, so it knows what the hell is going on. \’Cause I damn sure don\’t!! This mess is screwed up…un-screw it!!
I seriously don\’t understand this change for three reasons:1) The actual space to read/write emails has decreased2) I can\’t access my sent mail3) I can\’t access my folders
It wont let me sign in!
i think it\’s awful !!!!!!!!!
i try and download messenger plus onto it but won\’t work.. grrr
I really don\’t like the new version of messenger… all the new flashy tricks and commands ultimately just lag my computer further, and generally dones\’t make it a faster experience. Also, you say the chat window is streamlined… it\’s really not. Yes, the toolbar along the top is smaller, but that was never the issue, the webcam icon and display controls don\’t need a column to themselves on the left, just stick them under the display pictures and that\’s an extra bit of space. Or… move both display pictures to the top-right and have the whole window dedicated to the conversation. Aside from the emote shortcuts not working at the moment, although Windows Live non-Beta users have told me they see the emoticon, the only other complain I have is the ease of controlling how my contacts are displayed. The old button worked fine, I could just to display groups or status easily, show or not show online contacts… it has a needless amount of tickboxes and dropdowns at the moment. PS. I\’ve tried these scene things, and even the default options are really bad quality… I just stick with the default style because it doesn\’t look like a really small bitmap has been stretched.
I like this one , but when i use the scene pictures they are all streched and look weird ! Why is this :S ? You\’ve gone ott this time !You should have just updated the Windows Live Messenger .And it wrecked my internet for ages.
Updated software was recently downloaded to my comp and since then I get the following error message when trying to open Spider Solitaire, "No Suitable Graphics Devices found" I have tried to restore but cannot get passed this problem. So far, My MS Office works fine and other programs I have tried. Looking for answers as to WHY? And how to correct the problem. Thanks in advance.
How do you get the old version back. The new one is awful
Can you access the folder where all the pictures are taken?\\
This new version is totally useless, and unneeded… I just bought 4 new laptops…i installed windows messenger onto mine, and those of my lads…theirs has the old, classic version…yet mines got this new crap…… Yahoo here we come…improving something that worked..and worked ok just leads peeps to another method of IM.. bless..maybe ill come back when ya give us the classic option….. after all, even vista run like classic xp…..
Label by " EMAIL" NEEDS TO BE PUT BACK…. I cant recognise any friends from their costantly changing nick name….. Why was it changed? At least give the option back…
The new message window looks horrible. Sorry, but it does. I am usually all for change but I much prefer the old version, the new one looks somehow empty and uninviting. I don\’t really like the odd bullet point things by the side of each message either, I\’d say get rid of those and put newlines underneath each successive post and it would look alot better.
I just upgraded to the latest Windows Live Messenger, because a pop-up dialog told me about the available upgrade. Now I can\’t sign in. I get Error code 8100030f (Signing in to Windows LIve Messenger failed because the authentication service is not compatible with this version of the program). Whad does this mean? What\’s an "authenticaion service"? Do I need to install an upgrade for it too? All I know is that Windows Live Messenger used to work for me before the upgrade, but now it does not work. This was a useful tool for me, but now since it doesn\’t work, it is worthless. Why did you change, when it was working fine? I should have known better, and not done the upgrade. I don\’t have time to deal with this sort of mess, but I do have the need for instant messaging. Perhaps Google or Yahoo provide a better solution?
I think its sucks cause i cant have all my conversations in the same window. And it takes a lot of space. And also it was more easy when you could have them all in a tab up top and u just pushed that one and there it was now i cant do it and its getting on my nerves
Ever since I upgraded to this new version, I cannot use it in my office anymore. I keep getting this errror message: "Signing in to Windows Live Messenger failed because the authentication service is not compatible with this version of the program."
