As we all know, people don’t live their whole online lives on one site or on one network—and with the wide proliferation of services out there, it’s getting harder every day to share all the cool stuff you’re doing with the people you care about. Similarly, it’s easy to feel like you have to check so many different places to see what your friends are up to that in the end, you wind up missing out.
With the new Windows Live, it’s easy for you to choose to share more of what you’re doing with the people you care about. This feature, called “web activities,” lets you share the stuff you do on other websites with the people you add to your network on Windows Live. Updates about your web activities appear not only on your personal profile, but also in the “What’s new” list in other popular areas of Windows Live that your friends may already use every day—like Messenger, Hotmail, and the Toolbar. You can choose which web activities to share, and for each activity, you decide whether to make it visible to everyone (public), just the people in your network, or just the people you choose.
Check out this fun video we made to demonstrate how it works in Windows Live.
Discovering web activities
There’s a variety of ways you might discover web activities for the first time:
What’s new list: On the home page, on a friend’s profile page, in Messenger, or anywhere else where you see a list of updates called “What’s new,” you will see an update when someone in your network adds a new web activity like Twitter, Yelp, or WordPress. Just click Add this web activity, and you’ll go right to the page to start sharing the stuff you’re doing on that website with people in your network on Windows Live.
Home page: On the home page, near the top of the right column, click Add web activities, and you’ll go to the web activities page, where you can choose from the various sites who have partnered with Windows Live.
Profile page: On your profile page, if you haven’t added any web activities yet, you’ll see a module on the left side encouraging you to add some. Click Add web activities, and you’ll go to the web activities page, where you can choose from the various partner sites to add.
Adding web activities
When you get to the web activities page, you’ll see a list of web activities to choose from. Windows Live has partnered with lots of different websites so that the people you care about can get updates on the stuff you do on their sites. The list of partner websites varies from one region to another and is continually growing, so keep an eye on this over the coming year if one of your favorite activities isn’t here yet—it may show up in the coming months.
Just click Add to choose the site you’d like to share your activities from….
All you have to do is enter your user name (or however you usually identify yourself to the partner website; for some sites, you’ll have to (securely) provide your password as well), and then click Add. Pretty simple.
Experiencing web activities
Now whenever you do new things on one of the sites you’ve added (like posting a new blog entry on WordPress or reviewing a new restaurant on Yelp), those activities will automatically show up in the list of what’s new with you on Windows Live—just like the activities you might do on Windows Live.
This means that people in your network can see those items on your profile page, as well as in any of the places on Windows Live where they see what’s new with people in their network like the home page, Windows Live Toolbar, Windows Live Messenger, etc.
| Web activities displayed on the profile page | Web activities displayed from Windows Live Toolbar | Web activities displayed in Messenger |
|
| |
And of course, clicking on any of your web activities in what’s new links directly to that content on the partner’s site.
| A Yelp web activity | A Twitter web activity |
| |
Lastly, after you’ve added some web activities, you and your friends can easily get to your content and see what sites you’re sharing from by looking at the module on your profile page.
I hope you enjoy beginning to share your web activities on other sites with your friends and family on Windows Live. And stay tuned for a great, steadily growing list of partners for web activities over the coming year.

Yeah, I couldn\’t see the vid either. I get a 403 Forbidden message. As with other things I\’ve been tinkering with all this today and find it extremely useful and easy to use, again, before I knew you\’d written about it.Love it! Can I see the vid though? Please:-)
@ Pat Hawks: Now that\’s a bit of a silly dig, you have all the information in the video on the site here in this post and I\’m sure you can figure out the rest of using web actives, yet the only thing you can do is make a snide comment but I guess that\’s what you get with people on the internet, Huh?Activities are awesome guys, great idea, keep up the good work, can\’t wait to get back home and really test it out tonight. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seen future innovation idea\’s.
Apologies, we accidentally posted the video with restricted permissions. We\’ll get that fixed in a moment and update the post …
I look forward to checking this out. Thanks!
bill, steve, steve, steve, richard, steve, thanks guys, you make me happy again. your old buddy, 0kewl. may the horsemen ride!!! UAH!!!
I like this feature very much, and I\’ve already made extensive use of the Twitter, Pandora, and StumbleUpon integration. Any info about which additional services will be integrated, and when we can expect it? I\’d like to see Facebook integration.
Great!
Any place for users to request for more web activities? The rule is only that the popular site have personal activity feeds, right?
Fantabulous, I like it…..
Greg, There is a list of the announced Web Activities partner sites at http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/techtracks/2008/11/12/full_list_windows_live_to_integrate_feeds_from_50.html
Oh great more junk to filter out of our 3 home pages!
Morning to WLT. No apologies necessary. I\’m actually getting to grips with everything:-)
Could you add myspace.com as a web activity and also can you give all windows live hotmail users more emil filters so they can filter more email and if the user blocks a certan email adress bonce the mesage back to the sender with a mesage that thatt email adress has been blocked.
That full list still leaves some of the big names (Eg: MySpace, Facebook) off. Look to Friendfeed and see what services they pull in; you should work hard to get many of those in Windows Live.
I\’m still getting the 403 error on the video.
Yup. Me too! Never mind.
This error (HTTP 403 Forbidden) means that Internet Explorer was able to connect to the website, but it does not have permission to view the webpage. The above is the reason why.
I have a problem with my MSN Space after your revamp. I cannot change the permission settings of my MSN Space. Everytime I try to change the permission, it gives me the following line:Sorry, Spaces is temporarily unavailable at this time. Please try your request again, or if the problem continues to persist, please consult Help for additional troubleshooting tips.Could your team help to fix this? Many thanks.
thank you
I love this feature! I wish it were more like MyBlogLog, where there\’s a section where you can type in the domain of each service you use, and even though you can\’t pull updates, it\’d be neat to point your friends to which services you use so they can easily go there and add you. MyBlogLog lists all types of popular services, and you can type in your user URL, and a nice icon representing the icon shows up on your profile. The Profile team should consider at least doing something as minor as this.
@ Michael – Try this: add a custom list to your WL Space, and put the links in there. Then, you can add the custom list to the main page of your space. A little bit manual, granted, but it works pretty well.
@ Roeland – According to the article in the Seattle Times (http://blog.seattletimes.nwsource.com/techtracks/2008/11/12/full_list_windows_live_to_integrate_feeds_from_50.html), Hyves will be added in the near future.
Yippee – the vid\’s able to play now. Have you tried it yet, Greg? Thanks, Gang:-)
I like fun
Hi everyone
Hi to all
@ Jen – Yep, awesome vid. This really shows off the idea of the WL Home page. Hopefully, this will help everyone understand one element of where this is all going.
You all have a lovely Christmas. Love and Peace to all @ Microsoft and to all you Posters. Glad you saw it, Greg.Take care, everyone.
I have recently upgraded to the beta version of messenger, but I dont like it. Is there a way to downgrade to the non-beta version?ThanksP.S. ***MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!***
I have recently been e-mailed about my account. I have been told to give my usser, password and the country I live in and my date of birth. Is this due to an over load of accounts and is this a real e-mail from windows live?Scott
@No Name: Don\’t touch this email with a bargepole. It\’s likely a scam. Delete and block it. If you can, report it as a Phishing Scam and Microsoft will take care of it as part of your security.
How come popfly is not part of Windows Live web activitieshttp://www.popfly.com/
Maybe they don\’t know what people want, Joseph. Hints like yours will help. Take note of Greg\’s suggestion a few notes down from this one.
Another thing you can share now is a nice new messenger virus! (please note attempt to stay on topic!}If the word \’foto\’ crops up in the middle of a conversation, followed by a link, do NOT click on it! If you do, it goes to a site that downloads a trojan installer that will even knock out antivirus software, including windows defender before it installs itself. This then downloads an endless stream of trojans on to your computer. Sort of a variation on an old favourite, but the new \’upgrades\’ are these1, if you are using the new messenger, there is a 50/50 chance that it will do it\’s stuff without being clicked on2, If you have used the new \’improved\’ replacement for shared folders (a linked folder on your skydrive}, it can hide a copy of itself as a hidden file on your skydrive.3, the information it seems to be after spcifically is your live (or msn) user name and password. Remember my warnings about the dangers of logins on more than 1 computer? Well, now the fun begins.Good news – http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm – Microsoft at it\’s best! will sort it out for you no problems. You can help by doing a cntrl/alt/del – task manager – processes – look for fxstaller.exe – right click – end process tree. Then go to C:/windows find fxstaller.exe and delete it THEN EMPTY THE RECYCLE BIN (very clever virus!)PM me if you need help
PS If you do suffer from this, it is VITAL THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR PASSWORD AS SOON AS YOU HAVE IT FIXED. Just remember, one of the side effects of multiple logins is to drive a nice big tunnel through all of your firewalls………………………..
@Dave: Wow. How did ya find out about this? Thanks for info.
Dear Live Team,Regards !I want if its possible blog on MAsh,how its work and whats the utility user have ……………..Hopefully it will be uploaded in comeing days and probably before the begnning of NEW YEAR from yourgoodself end………..Thanx !
@ Dave – Too bad they\’re pulling the plug on OneCare. Thanks for the info and Merry Christmas!
Por favor en español,no entiendo casi nada del ingles,a ver si me indican una pagina del mismo blog en español,gracias,el blog deberia ser internacional.Muchas gracias.
@ Greg – I think you will find that, far from being closed down, OneCare will be made free to registered windows users in the near future. For now though, the online scan is the biz. Have a good\’n
More detais here http://www.securityfocus.com/brief/857
I read the news on tons of sites and belong to a few of the Microsoft Forums. The Forum dedicated to OneCare talks about OneCare being done away with but for those who have another subscription coming up this year, it\’ll be supported for that year. Morro will take the place of OneCare; slowly being introduced sometimes in \’09.I\’m gutted. I love OneCare. Anyway, we\’re talking here about things that have nothing to do with this blog.
I love the video!….
I install the Outlook Connector (version:12.06414.1000) in my outlook 2007, but it always tell my that Calendar synchronization failed. Why? Anyone can give some reason? Thanks.
With the Live Toolbar, I can\’t autofill…the button is non-existant as far as I can tell. This is an essential part of browsing. Any idea when this will be included in the Live Toolbar? Thanks.
I download the final version of windows live 2009, and its great, all works without problems, the only that maybe i dont like is the windows live toolbar i like more teh previous but its ok!.One question… when you want to read you email box from you msn .. why i they send me to msn hotmail?, in the previous messenger you can read your mail easier.well i love messenger 2009!adios!
thats alot words
If plagued with the dreaded Vista-induced 80070005 error code then Windows Live is useless…when is Microsoft going to effectively patch this rather than adding more things! Two months with no Live Messenger at all. Come on Microsoft!
I keep getting error code 8007007e. We need a patch or a way to reinstall and repair all of the live components. (e.g. mail, messenger, etc.) Once it gives an error the whole thing is just a waste of disk space. Microsoft dropped the ball one more time. Again with releasing something without fully thinking it through. IF YOU CAN\’T FIX WHAT YOU\’VE ALREADY MADE DON\’T RELEASE MORE STUFF TO ADD ON TO IT!!!
Zune activities would also be nice to have
trying to take windows live essentials of my computer i tryed to delete it from my add and remove programs and not working bull shit messenger thats for sure
Now discussing all things Windows Live here at http://livesoapbox.groups.live.com where you can have a moan, talk, discuss, rant, rave, make suggestion and generally discuss all the new changes on Windows Live, the new Essentials applications, or indeed anthing else that takes your fancy!
love the ready to download programs. This will be of great help to those who wanted to organize events or organize other events in one\’s life.
Also think it would be nice if this module had the option add web activities not already listed by WL.
Unfortunately, Live does not include correct instructions for adding a wordpress blog. It does not recognize the correct URL for the blog, nor does it accept the format included in it\’s own example.
can i change my profile url?i changed my space url but my profile still have the odd combination of letters and numbers.
