We’ve heard that a small number of you are experiencing audio and video problems with your webcam after installing the latest version of Windows Live Messenger. After looking into this, we found that for users who are seeing error code 0x8AC70013 or 0x8AC70202, this may be caused by an incompatibility with McAfee Site Advisor.
McAfee is working on a patch to fix this, but until it becomes available, if you’re having audio or video problems with the new version of Messenger and are running McAfee, McAfee has posted a workaround on its website at: http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100601.
UPDATE: McAfee has published an update to their Site Advisor program to fix this problem. For more info, please see the McAfee FAQ here: http://service.mcafee.com/faqdocument.aspx?id=TS100601
Thanks,
The Windows Live team

My case is different. The other person can see my webcam, but I can\’t.I can\’t do the show webcam option. The tools things is fine.My mic dies after a bit.I don\’t get any errors.Help, please?
I have AVG Security Suite and I get the error report "Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later. (0x80ee000c)"Cannot make ANY calls
I have the same problem ANDRES… it\’s frustrating. I got it to connect ONCE and that was it. Then I disconnected from windows live after about 5 minutes. I can see my friend\’s webcam but he cannot see mine.
Windows Live Team!Back in 1995 when supporting Excel and the decimal place bug appeared in the newer version of Excel, the escalation tech reproduced and reported the issue to our Toronto office and within a few days a a patch was issued which resolved the issue. The internet was in it\’s infancy and we did everything by phone. Ah how times have changed. If this is cause by internet security software (not just McAfee) being incompatible with Live Messenger 2009, then who is talking to who to get this resolved?I know that 260 some odd comments on this blog is not huge on a planetary scale. Regardless of that we deserve not only a decent answer but a real solution, fix or path for this issue."Is there anybody out there?"– Pink Floyd – The Wall
I don\’t have mcafee installed, i can see the other person cam, they can see mine, so everything looks fine till this point, but me i can,t see my cam… i mean i see a big X but the other person still see me…. this is the crappier verion of msn yet, the group and lists of friend are hard to sustomize, it looks like we regressed back in time as or the looks of it… pleae find a fix for that or let us download the old version again… so that we can actually use the software!!!!!
I have McAfee Site Advisor and have just tried to use their workaround but it doesn\’t work! I went through all their instructions and then couldn\’t save the amended file – eve if I tried to rename it. I am getting desperate now as it took me two days to find anything about the problem
Martywrote: UPDATE: Vista + McAfee users. Do not follow McAfee\’s steps. Try this, I did and finally cam is up!Click on start, type \’notepad\’, right click on notepad icon, select \’run as administrator\’, now you can locate, make, and save changes to to the \’sasets\’ file.It worked.. Thanks to Marty. I had done this and i could configure the webcam settings. Have not tried video conferencing yet as its too late at my side. But so far i can configure the webcam settings
Are you people that call yourselves programmers for real? I have a solution to the problem for all of us that are having trouble with the crappy software: let\’s just use some other provider, at least we know that it will work. Maybe this will teach them a lesson. P.S don\’t call yourselves world leading software developers when you have no freaking clue what you are doing. . .
Good products are not only the ones that work but also the ones that supports its users. The silence from the team seems to confirm the quality behind this one. I\’m glad that I still have Skype and have kept the previous version of Live Messenger. So guess what my weekend project will be.Bye-Bye 2009 untill you mature.
I made the change to SiteAdvisor as suggested by McAfee. I have windows XP. My son has Vista and he has problem making change. I was able to get video but no sound when cntacting daughter inEdmonton. I uninstalled Windows Live 2009 and installed Version 2008 and still have problem. I contacted McAfee today and they said Audion is not their problem.? Who is responsible??? Can somebody help an old 80 year old who is on the verge of going nuts
Hello Windows Live team!People on this blog are screaming for help. An acknowledgement that someone is reading this and that some kind of solution is in the works would go a long way into preventing the use of colorful metaphores in this blog.Read carefully. "This is no longer just a McAffee issue." "Live Messenger is broken." "No workaround band-aid please!"
Further to my message yesterday (80 year old), My son was able to change McAfee so i reinstalled Version 2009. We were able tosee each other after keying on the webcam icon, but still no sound. I discovered a new icon beside Nudge and learned that by pressing on this icon or pressing F2, you can record a short message. On releasing F2, etc. the message goes to your contact. Your contact presses F2 of keys on icon to reply, But STILL NO AUDIO IN SYNC WITH THE VIDEO. Are we to live with this problem. Is there another Messenger (Yahoo, Google) that works with XP/VISTA WITH NO SUCH PROBLEM. As mentioned before, McAfee claims their program is not he cause of the Audio Problem.
i have a problem with webcam but its not the same i just downloaded new msn today an i can use my webcam and that for a video call but when i use it too just show my webcam it works for about 10seconds and then it just says webcam session ended…help??
and for no name underneath me its not in sync because ur using an audio record that doesnt av anything to do with webcam…u cn use it with webcam off if u have a mic…and sometimes video call doesnt work because of the fact ur tryin to talk an use webcam at same time so it lags and sound may not come out properly
Thanks Padraic. I apologize and on reading over the message I sent, I agree that I did not make it clear. You are right, the recorded message feature would not be in sync with the video. I was aware of that and would add that my son and I did not use a mic. I guess, that all I want to say is Live please let us have what we had before. In the past we were able to use our webcam and Windows Live and the video with the audio being in sync with the video. There was no time limit. I am discourage that Microsoft Windows Live has not given an update to let us know what is going on. There last message was January 21. By the way my name is Bill and I am learning about the computer the hard way.
I spent 6 hours today trying to figure out why my Chicony webcam on my Toshiba labtop no longer worked with windows messenger after upgrading to the latest version. I checked everything includng looking for new drivers. First I found the the McAfee issue and corrected that. The next issue was the error message about another program locking up the web cam. Finally I had to uninstall messenger 2009 and download 8.1. The jury is still out on whether or not that works. Wow. first we get Vista which is funky enough with all of it\’s "are you sure" messages and now we have webcam issues with messenger 2009 . If you can\’t get a fix out to us then perhaps you can anwer this question, Why am I thnking about buying a MAC and using Yahoo messenger?
I have a desktop computer with a microsoft Lifecam VX300 and a Campaq Presario C60 laptop with integral webcam. I have recently downloaded the new version on Live Messenger and now have no audio both computers with a video call. I can bring up the settings and it reponds to sound but no audio on a video call. I do not have McAfee installed on either computer; using instead Norton and AVG. Please help.
Ok clearly having McAfee isn\’t the only problem. How about the Windows Live team does something about it. I have a webcam that works fine until I get into windows live and then it stuffs up. Whats the go?
My webcam works perfectly in the older versions of Windows Live Messenger, but when I upgrade to the newest version nothing works. After clicking "Accept" I only get the load message for a couple of minutes and the it ends with the message "The webcam session has ended." Please fix this as it is clearly a bug in the new messenger. It worked in the old one, and it still works in other applications such as Skype, so it\’s the new messenger that\’s the problem.
This problem still hasn\’t been fixed. I upgraded today (23rd March) to the new Messenger and am not able to use my Webcam (Microsoft LifeCam) at all. It connects for a minute or so and then closes with the message \’Webcam session has ended\’. I Do Not use McAfee on either the Desktop or Laptop, my webcam works fine in the old version of Messenger that I did have on this computer. So what is being done to fix this? I\’m very close to closing my Windows Live account and moving back over to Yahoo.. at least their messenger works the way it should and they don\’t blame something else for bugs in their software
I agree with Emma\’s comment below. Im sick and tired of my webcam not being able to connect. It just freezes and turns itself off when trying to connect. Its majorly frustrating, and I need it to work. Do something about it
if we un install this current windows live messenger, where do we find the old version to download???:S
I fixed the \’no webcam\’ issue by going to tools/audio video setup.. chose \’disable\’ and saved. Then, went back through the audio/video setup, chose my default webcam and it started to work again. It looks like I have to do this each time I start messenger, but at least its working for now.
today i signed in to msn and it came up with a window saying that my webcam will be able to work now, but when my friend asked me to go on webcam, it came up with "Messenger is not available right now. Please try again later. (0x8ac70202)" i was confused…..The McAfee sight thing ses that i have aredy got version 2.9, so i should uninstall msn…..it ses to navigate to a folder….what on earth does tht mean and how do i navigate to it?PLEASE HELPP
My webcam is pluged in and set up accept everytime i try to use it it will come up with a random tv show. Instead of my face. Ive tryed using a different webcam and everything. Would this problem be because of the PVR we had installed to our computer? I am also on vista. Is that a problem?
My problem is a little different than what\’s described here. I don\’t have McAfee, neither does the person I\’m trying to connect to. I can connect to *EVERYONE* else on my contact list *except* one particular person, and it\’s driving both of us absolutely insane. The webcam will pop up on the side and show my face, and it\’ll show it\’s loading for him. Then it decides that it doesn\’t want to actually connect, and it ends the webcam session the minute it connects with the "Webcam session was ended," message.Any ideas, guys?
HI I am having problem gettin my webcam to work, it wont work at all. I dont have Mcfee
I have the same problem, after clicking "Accept" It pretends to load for a couple of minutes and it ends with "The webcam session has ended.".. I don\’t have McAfee, so please fix this?
Well I did the work around described in McAfee website referenced in this article, but I\’m still getting 0x8ac70013 error. I cannot do video or talk… I tried reinstalling 2009 Live hoping it would be fixed. I couldn\’t find any solution to this Microsoft or Live.com. So, my only hope is to go back 2008 Live version, and hope that it works… Thank god there are other IM programs…
i have a problem i cant talk to ANYONE ive tried bu where it asks for my e-mail i dont know how to put it hel
i have a problem with my audio, and have the code (0x8ac70013) but have avg instead free edition 8.5 plz help
I have problem with show my webcam in grey and when i made and video call doesnt work and the cam was red X so . I used NOD32 how can fixed itthanks
Hi,i recently download the latest version 2009 of messenger and when i try to use my web cam, its shows really dark, in the mean time if i use on yahoo its shows perfectly, so i m trying to find out why its coming dark only on msn . please help me to resolve this problem, Thanks.
Hey there. I have windows live messenger and Vista. My webcam was working for a time, up until a month ago. I do not have McAfee, I use nortons and I have tried to fix my webcam thinking it was my computer, the webcam is fine. when I go to audio/video setting in MSN I can see my cam but I cannot click on "show my webcam" and when I click on video call my cam does not work. PLEASE SOLVE THIS IT IS DRIVING ME INSANE!
Hey. I have Windows Live and Vista. My webcam has worked on all the older versions of Live but I have downloaded the new one and now it won\’t work at all. It acts like it\’s loading and then says "web cam session has ended". I have tried shutting off my firewalls and that doesn\’t work. I also reinstalled Live and nothing there. IF you have any ideas please let me know. I\’m in the military and this is the only way my Finance can see me for months at a time and it\’s driving us both crazy.
I don\’t get this, my problem is similar to some.. different to others. I send my webcam and they click connect, it says connecting then says "The webcam session has ended" then one day randomly out of the blue it will work but the next tim ei try to connect to someone it says it the session has ended. I don\’t run McAfee and this has only been happening since people started upgrading to the new windows live.
The link is broken! Can you post the good one.
I have 3 PCs that use Win Vista Ultimate. I have three webcams. I use Norton Antivirus. All webcams worked fine prior to the Win Live Messenger 2009 upgrade. Now, none of them work!!! The same thing happened to my brother on his 3 PCs, including one at his shop. Solutions involving McAfee don\’t apply to us. What exactly did Microsoft do to cause this? How can it be repaired? We have lost a valuable function on our PCs.
It\’s just the feature "show my webcam" doesn\’t appear highlighted so I can\’t use it!
After installation of new Windows Messenger Live, the integrated webcam on my Sager Notebook PC won\’t work. I downloaded the webcam driver off the Sager website and attempted to reinstall. The webcam driver software stated that the driver was already detected on my system. Yet, I cannot find it listed in the Device Manager. I attempted to "repair" Wndows Messenger Live. This made no difference. I had the same problem on my desktop PC. However, I was able to regain function by reinstalling a new driver from the Microsoft website and "repairing" the messenger software. My wife\’s HP notebook has yet to be fixed. My brother has 3 PCs without webcam use. How do we fix all these PCs?
I have version 14.0.8064.206 on VISTA Ultimate. When I try to a video call, I can see the other party web cam, the microphone of my web cam works ok (my partner ears it), but my video does not – I see a cross on it. If I go to Tools->Audio Video setup, I can see my image on the webcam but it doesn\’t work in video calls.Any ideas ?Thanks for any help !
my webcam keeps failing since upgrading to version 2009
I gave up on Windows Live Messenger 2009. Uninstalled it and installed Messenger Version 8.1. It works okay and am getting Audio in sync with the Video.
I have been battling this too. Did not have ant McAfee products as I prefer AVG tho I worked out the issue. AVG8.5 has Link Scanner which seems to use the Site Advisor. I disabled the scanner in the avg control panel and now my cam works fine again I had tried everything and was going crazy and even rolling back didnt help as Microsoft was blocking the older versions forcing you to upgrade. If you have AVG turn of the scanner and it will help.
A lot of people including myself have problem with webcam when both sides are using latest version of 2009. We have done tons of tests and can confirm that this does not happen with 1 side using 2009 and the other using 8.5. Can you guys please look into this?
i have the same probmlem as others on ere when i go on webcam with others it says loading then says websession ended ppl can see my webcam and see me but i dont seem to be able to see others grrri think messanger should sorght it befour they get loads of complaints
hiyea i got the same problem asa few others , i click on show my cam n it loads up and then it shows webcam session ended witout actually connecting? it was working yesterday? :-S its really annoying! needs to be sorted out
Got vista 32 and 64 new messenger runs ok on both, got another laptop with 32 bit vista and messenger wont video keeps freezing wont go into full screen , the sound is various and get a booming in the background, didn\’t want this messenger but on all three machines previuos versions stopped running just get black boxes, but perfect pics and sound, what is going on?????????
PS: I have the same running on all comps, live onecare and don\’t have anything else can talk to people on previuos versions of messenger fine just this 2009 version where I get the problems , get a grip and sort it out!!!!!!!!!!!
Im facing the same problem as "Outie" .. I can\’t make Video Call with people who use the latest version as mine..I also don\’t understand why I can\’t show my webcam without making microphone.. I can choose only Make a vieo call..I think my problem is not because of McAfee.. I don\’t see any error codes..When i started VideoCall (in this latest version).. my webcam didn\’t show the picture on the screen.. but I could see that it was working.. it\’s only that people can\’t see me and I also can\’t see myself on screen.What\’s wong with this latest version?
FUCK WINDOWS MESSENGER 2009 ITS SUCH A PAIN EVERY TIME I GO ON WEBCAM.. IT STARTS ND THEN STOPS SAYINGWEBCAM SESSION ENDEDARGHHHHH
When will the patch be out for this problem ?
this isnt just happening with mcafee so its not them to need to solve the problem its obv msn so can you please sort it cause its annoying me i cant use my cam anymore!!!!!!!
i don t have any mcafee progs the webcam was working fine until last week!!!!
I don\’t have McAfee and I have this problem. Please fix it or allow us to re-install older versions of MSN. I use it to talk to my family who live abroad and this has been very distressing.
please help… my webcam is working great but after windows mesenger 2009 my webcam is looking deactive.. i didnt understand..i am trying to resetup again but mesenger is showing my cam is working..but still deactive..please..whats going…
I also do not have any McAfee software on my computer and I am unable to use my webcam. This is very annoying as I have even purchased a windows live camera and it does not work. I would rather use an older version of MSN then not be able to use my cam. I also have family members far away from me that I communicate with and am unable to now because of this.
I also cannot use my webcam, and have no McAffee software. It worked once, then not ever again. This makes no sense. I can set it up, see myself, but the webcam is disabled when I try to use it in this one program. Every other program works fine. What the heck is going on at Microsoft anyway? How about if Bill puts a few of his billions back into the company to hire some competent American programers!
Don\’t have mcAfee….Webcam still not working =S
Same here. I don\’t have McAffee and it used to work just fine. I can view a cam, but i cant send mine nor do a video call. I tried upgrading to the newest version as well, but still didn\’t fix it, I have since uninstalled the new version and went back to 8.5 and it still wont work. The person i was trying to send the cam too has seen other cams so its not them either. Why did this feature all of the sudden stop working? Seems to work on all other IM clients and even on websites like true.com. Sounds like some sort of update for Vista must have messed this up. Im running a 64 bit Ultimate system if it helps.

I do not have McAfee and have a problem with video messaging — everything seems to work in the messenger setup but when I try to initiate a call it get error 0x8ac70013. The camera and audio work in Skype and all other applications but not in messenger — What can be done to fix this??
I have the same problem now running a Dell with Vista (32 bit). I do not have any McAfe products on my computer so how is following the instructions supposed to fix the problem. I have had more problems since I downloaded IEv8, than when I was running with IEv6. Any thoughts out there?
I dont have mcafee and error 0x8ac70013 i happening to me?
LoL, nothing changeh with microsoft. Just look at the previou operating systems they have realized, with cricitcal flaws making the os open to attack etc. Thou to release a version of messenger that doesnt work with cam, is like releasing an os without the compatability of an optical drive. Come on microsoft, beta test your product before introduce onto the public doman. Hence why you dont have a great rep at times!
more then a few members had problem with you guys!!! I don\’t have macfee and my audio on windows live messenger doesn\’t workerror 0x8ACC70013
my web cam is working BUT its not showing clearly and its showing dark when i cam with someone else. it works fine when i open it seperately. whats goin on with it???
my cm works but the lighting is rubbish on it and if it to far away it goes black soo i have to literally have it right up to my face, its just bad why did you have to make the new msn its rubbish let us have the old one please!!
I need help, i just downloaded the newest version of windows live messenger and now me video does not working, I don\’t have McAfee so that solution does not work. I also tried to reinstall version 8.5 and that did not work. What\’s my next step
Hello I want to say there a huge problem with video conferences. Before this 2009 version I could initiate a video conference and that was ok. But now, it is impossible. Different error messengers have already appeared. I do not use anything of mcaffe, I tell in advance. I have instelled the Skype and I have asked to my contacts doing the same. With Skype I can use the webcam without any problem.
,,,
I don\’t have McAfee installed, but I still have this problem.
Neither do i — this is very frustrating — it was working prior to upgrade and works with skype just fine. You are going to lose a number of users if this is not resolved
This problem is getting worse…. when will you have a fix for it?
